Trevor Turner - Spiral
Overview
Trevor Turner approached me again in early 2024 to help him design the cover for Spiral, his second major release, as well as a single cover to help promote the EP.
We met to discuss the themes of the EP and agree upon a direction. I then designed 3 cover concepts for the EP, we agreed on one, and then revised and polished it to get the final design. After that I used the artwork to create a single cover for the promotion of the EP.
Approach
In our early meetings Turner described Spiral as “…designed to start soft and get heavier as it goes (kind of spiraling out of control)” and “…each song has its own thing to say but they’re similar in being atmospheric and psychological.” I leaned on those ideas a lot and aimed to create something for the cover that could encapsulate them while also being distinct and eye catching.
Representing Turner and the warping of his mind was the center concept for the artwork. I created a distinct silhouette of Turner with a section of his head missing that was dramatically “spiraling.” To emphasize the psychological nature of the EP I set the typography on its side so that it also felt warped or “off.” To make the cover as eye catching as possible I used dramatic amounts of white space that created lots of contrast with the figure and isolated it as the focal point of the artwork. Then to give the artwork a more distinct and somewhat surreal effect, I created a special glitched pattern that I used to create the texture and eye catching detail and bring everything together.
