Commercial Street Parking Garage

Presentation Design - Branding

Overview

In 2025 I was selected as a part of a team to create a comprehensive design plan that would reimagine a central hub of downtown Bellingham, WA; the Commercial St parking garage. Our interdisciplinary team collaborated over the course of 3 months to design, plan, and pitch a massive mural project. Our aim was to create a plan to turn the drab concrete building into a beautiful, active, and enlivening element of the downtown area.

Approach

Design

Our team of city representatives, architects, business leaders, artists, engineers, and designers collaborated intensely to imagine new possibilities for the parking structure. We pooled inspiration, discussed the city and its history, created sketches, and evaluated the structure's possibilities. We collectively identified 4 priority sections of the exterior that would create maximum impact for pedestrians and motorists: the enter and exit ramps, primary exterior panels, and the spiral ramp.

Plan

Our team set out to evaluate the surface area of the building, budget potential expenses, and offer alternatives to certain projects. We consolidated our references for murals and decided on clear aesthetics for each priority section. I designed a number of color palettes that were approved by the team.

We were very careful in this phase to account for muralists in the phase. We created a framework for them to work in so a cohesive vision for the structure would be achieved without hindering their own creativity, inspirations, and style.

Present

Taking the lead on the pitch deck, I created a cohesive, clear, and inspiring presentation designed to educate readers about the space and guide future artists on the direction our team had identified.

Breaking up the presentation into clear sections was my main priority to make sure that the massive amount of information was contextual, organized, and easy to follow. I was also a major contributor to the mockups of the murals on the building, and selected most of the photo references used in the pitch deck.

Outcomes

Our presentation to the Arts Commission went great and they unanimously voted to approve our recommendations. The Commissioners were very impressed with how the team was able to thread the needle of providing guidance without hindering creativity of future artists.

The project will, hopefully, begin in 2026.
